COME TO THE RUBY MOUNTAIN BALLOON FESTIVAL
AND EXPERIENCE THE THRILL OF A LIFETIME!
HELP MAKE THE EVENT A SUCCESS FOR YEARS TO COME.
VOLUNTEER NOW TO JOIN A HOT AIR BALLOON CREW!
Many of the pilots who are attending the event will need help from local
crewmembers in launching, chasing and packing up their balloons. It is a
big event not only for the pilots and crew, but also the spectators on
the launch field.
Hot Air Balloon Crew Responsibilities:
- Help set up, inflate and launch the balloon. The pilot will be there
to help and instruct along the way.
- Assist in chasing the balloon in a chase vehicle. It is helpful to
have someone familiar with the area to help the pilot be guided to a
landing area.
- Help deflate and pack up the balloon. Some lifting is required.
- Answer questions from spectators. People love to watch hot air
balloons. You may be asked questions about the event.
- Work as a team. As a crewmember, you will be a part of a team working
with a specific balloon and pilot.
Who can participate?
Everyone can come and get involved. Each pilot needs 3 or 4 additional
people for their balloon, so joining a balloon crew allows for friends
and families to come together and enjoy this great adventure.
What to wear?
In the chilly fall mornings well known in Elko and Spring Creek, Nevada,
layers of clothing would work best. Long pants and sturdy shoes are
essential just in case the pilot should land in a remote location.
A good pair of leather gloves or gloves with leather palms are an
important part of a crewmember’s tool kit. Crewing for a balloon
involves working with ropes and sometimes handling warm or hot equipment
as well as protecting many yards of colorful fabric.
What NOT to wear:
- Nylon or any other materials that can generate static electricity or
sparks
- Dangling clothing, jewelry or accessories that can get snagged on the
basket or equipment
- Sandals or flip-flops
